The Peshtigo Fire: A Forgotten Midwest Tragedy

The Peshtigo fire destroyed approximately 1.5 million acres of forest in Wisconsin and parts of Michigan and ended between 1,200 and 2,400 lives. The fire consumed an estimated 17 villages and communities and decimated every building in Peshtigo and beyond. It melted metal, turned sand into glass, and wiped out food supplies and city records.  Listen now to learn more about this tragic and often forgotten event.
